Leaves, stipulate, oval, serrated; flowers, generally bisexual, regular, 5 sepals, 5 petals, 5 to numerous stamens; several to numerous simple pistils; often swollen receptacle beneath the pistil; the ovary is positioned inferior, semi-inferior, or superior; ovules usually 2 in each carpel, rarely 1 or several; styles as many as carpels; fruit a follicle, pome, achene, or drupe, rarely a capsule, naked or enclosed in persistent hypanthium and sometimes also by sepals.
